Last week’s episode threw a lot of punches and it was hard to believe they could continue this streak of shocks and surprises, but they did. With the sad news of the series cancellation, the stakes are higher to conclude with a bang and it looks like they may be doing so. We are getting closer to Black Sunday with four more episode with tonight being the turning point for our characters’ story arc.
Gloriana’s in trouble
The sweet and innocent Anne that reappeared in the last episode has been drained from her body with the appearance of Gloriana, who risks her losing Cotton. The prophecy wasn’t with Anne, but with his past love Gloriana and their unborn child. Anne invites the sick Gloriana to her home, locked in her hidden room, to figure out how to deal with her. Cotton visits Anne and wants her and their child to move into the Sibley home to protect her from the Devil’s evil plans. Anne requests for a few days and then she will be with him.
Later on, Anne checks on Gloriana, who thought she heard Cotton’s voice. She pretends to be on Gloriana’s side, but we see glimpses of Anne’s evil self. As she is prepping a spell, she sees a creature, which also appears in Gloriana’s dream. The dark monster, similar to the one following Mary last season, was a bit of a shock. I jumped back a few when I saw it.
The creature continues to follow Anne, who has just gotten the last part of her spell. With Gloriana’s complete trust in Anne, Anne is able to conduct the spell on her, which consists of her laying naked beside her. Gloriana wakes up to the sound of Cotton holding a baby. She is smiling and finds Anne with the child, happy with Cotton. She then wakes up beside Anne, who now has the baby transferred to her womb.
Wow. That is all kinds of messed up, but very expected. Now, Anne is the chosen one carrying Cotton’s baby. I’m not sure what she is going to do with Gloriana, because if she gets out, Cotton will know everything. Is Anne really willing to take that risk?
As for the creature, it reminded me of when Mary was giving birth to her child and the creature appeared before her. Could Anne’s baby be next to be taken for the NEXT Devil rebirth? Could this be hinting at the end of Little John’s reign of terror? If we reflect back to Mary’s life, it certainly could be.
The Devil’s Plan
With Mary obtaining her wardrobe/armor, she is ready to do what it takes to take the devil down. He has plans to wed her once Salem has been destroyed, which he plans in five days on a Sunday. The Sentinel and the Devil bicker about the plans, but the Devil shuts him up quick.
The Devil continues playing chess with God, which shocks Cotton. The Devil tells Cotton that the Angels are scary, because of the terrible things they did and did it all for God. The Devil said at least he’s honest about his plans for destruction and vengeance.
John Alden returns to Salem and reports the bad news to Hawthorne, but he has a plan. He returns home to find Tituba in need of his help. In order to listen to her, he requests to meet with Mary. Tituba arranges the meeting between Mary and John who embrace and find out only Sebastian knows the Dark Lord’s plan. He gives her the Angel Tears. Mary tells him she will get the information using her intelligence and badassery.
Meanwhile, John has his men create a perimeter around Salem to protect it. To encourage them, he creates the story of Tomahawk Billy, in honor of his fallen friend. Tituba greets him again and requests that he kills the Sentinel. She provides him the tools to do so.
Sebastian is still desperate for Mary’s love. With the help of his mother, he begins to woo Mary, while his mother takes care of the Devil. Mary pays Sebastian a visit under the guise that she would be with him if it weren’t for the Devil. Sebastian tells her he has a plan for the two to be together but expects her to join him in his chambers that night. When she visits him, he knows she is still in love with John and takes her to John’s house, where John is forced to watch Sebastian and Mary make love.
Sebastian is actually pretty damn smart. I thought this whole time that he would be a sucker to Mary’s charm when all along, he knew what he was doing. Of course, the Devil knows something is going on between the two, so I wouldn’t guess Sebastian is in the safe zone. Poor John Alden.
Team Isaac
Hawthorne proposes to Mercy, but she refuses to until Isaac has been dealt with.
Meanwhile, Isaac has found new inspiration for life with the help of his sidekick Dorcas. She makes him a cake to cheer him up. They bond like brother and sister, which was really cute to watch. Isaac truly needed a friend who believed in him and he found it in the heart of a little girl.
Hawthorne hunts for Isaac at Knocker’s Hole and tells him he must turn in his stick (like a badge). Isaac turns the tables on Hawthorne in front of the crowd of Knocker’s Hole and they come to Isaac’s defense, protecting him from Hawthorne and his men. The men, who were previously under Mercy’s control, vow to follow Isaac.
Finally! The hard work that Isaac has put to protect the people of Knocker’s Hole has paid off. He’s finally gotten the respect he deserves. Please, don’t take this away from him, especially since this will be the last season of the series.
Salem airs on Wednesdays at 9 pm on WGN America.
