There is just so much going on in this episode and SO MANY SHOCKING EVENTS. The writing is just becoming better and better because of the unexpectedness of it all. What is going to happen next?
Let’s recap.
RIP BILLY
After the last episode, John Alden and Billy were left with the Indians attacking them. After stabbing several of the Indians, they come back up like zombies. Alden is able to behead one, but is unable to save Billy. As he attempts to tend to Billy’s wounds, he finds out her secret. She reveals the truth to him that her family were killed by the French and Indians. She remembers throughout the roundup, she played the ballads of John Alden hoping he’d come and save them all. Once she escaped, she decided to dress as a man to become a warrior to get revenge and meet her hero – John Alden.
Now I understand Billy’s purpose for John. She reminded him of what a hero he was and still is. With this knowledge, maybe, John can become who he was before.
COTTON’S GONNA BE A DADDY
After finding out he’s going to become a father, Cotton returns to the Devil to save Anne from death. The Sentinel wants to kill them both, but are spared by the Devil, who recruits Cotton to write his story – “to be his Moses”. Cotton reveals to Anne his vision of becoming a father. Anne is determined to prove she is worth being his wife and help the townspeople.
The Sentinel tells Cotton the story of the war with God to have him write it down. The Sentinel, still bitter about God’s wrath, doesn’t believe in one powerful being. This is important.
As Cotton is writing the Devil’s memoirs, he hears voices of screaming and finds the door to hell. He looks in the peephole and finds himself hung on a cross in pain and begins to bleed from the eyes. He turns to find Mary and attacks her. She reveals that she is no longer a witch, but he does not believe her. Mary tells him that she is his ally as he walks away.
Anne visits Cotton and promises to help those who are sick. She goes to Knocker’s Hole and tends to a pregnant woman who is looking for her baby’s father. Anne watches over her and it turns out to be Gloriana who is carrying Cotton’s baby.
What?!?! We may see the Evil Anne coming back again and doing something shady to keep Cotton. Will she kill Gloriana and take her unborn baby to be her own? Will she reveal the truth? Unlikely. But, I wouldn’t be surprised seeing the witch side of Anne come out.
MARY’S GOT GAME
Mary visits the Devil and reveals she heard a voice telling her to commit suicide. He grows angry and looks at the Sentinel. She doesn’t rat him out and submits to the Devil. She asks him what he has planned for her and when alone, he tells her she will be his bride and goddess to his kingdom – the universe, in which he will be ruler. Sebastian hears all of this and is heartbroken.
The Sentinel pays a visit to Mary and asks her why she lied to the Devil and not reveal the truth about the Sentinel telling her to kill herself. She said she sees compassion in him and that they may be able to become allies. She reveals the Devil’s plans of becoming a God, which the Sentinel does not approve of. He reveals that there is a spy in the Essex witches.
He confronts the Devil about his plans. He threatens that the Devil is strong, but not as strong as all of his brothers combined. Looks like a war is brewing.
THE TRUE TRAITOR
Tituba visits Mary in the home to warn her of a potential spy within the Essex witches and warns her to trust no one. Tituba uses her vision to find the traitor within the hive, which they kill off. We find out later that Tituba is the traitor working with the Devil and requests for her reward and vengeance. He requests one more favor – to kill his brother, the Sentinel.
I expected this. Mary knew what she was doing getting them to go against each other. Oh man, I cannot wait for this war between brothers than anyone else. It’d actually be entertaining to watch the Devil, played by a child, to kick the Sentinel’s ass.
TRUE LOVE WINS
Isaac stayed hidden in Mercy’s chambers and releases her caged birds, which were the penises of her men she cut off from last season. Once they returned to the men, they begin stabbing Mercy to death.
Hawthorne arrives to the brothel to find the girls crying and sees Mercy bleeding to death on her bed. Mercy has accepted death and feels that she deserves this. She gives him the final antidote to free him of her, but he refuses to take it and tells he loves her. Her girls surround her and give their blood to heal her freely because they also love her.
Okay, I’m loving this Mercy so much. She has always been a villain, but she’s seriously becoming so likable and possibly good. The whole storyline of Mercy’s girls and Hawthorne staying by her side. I’m actually rooting for her and her newfound love, Hawthorne. I’m sorry Isaac. I’m for Mercy now.
SEBASTIAN’S STILL A MAMA’S BOY
Sebastian visits his mother’s tomb and talks to her about the Devil’s plan. He is still heartbroken for not being with Mary. His mother wants to help him and requests for her blood, which he retrieves from the Devil’s personal canister. He feeds her the blood from his lips, which is a creepy scene and one I wonder if Joe Doyle had issues with.
Sebastian visits Mary at the end of the episode and gifts her access to her closet, which contains all of her dresses. She thanks him with a kiss on the cheek. Baby steps, Sebastian. Baby steps. But, I honestly think Mary is playing him too. You all know, she loves John. We all do.
I am excited to see Mary back in her garments. This is her armor and now, we will see her rise.
OF COURSE, WE EXPECTED THIS FROM DINLEY
And, of course, Marilyn Manson’s character follows the Dark Lord. After he murders Treasurer Putnam, Todd Sweeney-style, Sebastian tells him he will be rewarded. This scene added nothing to the conversation, but I am completely fine with it because we get to see Manson at his element. We also get to see Manson kill a guy in the Todd Sweeney style we were promised. Great homage to Sweeney! I cannot wait for more.
Salem airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on WGN America.
