Lenovo announces big plans for Moto Mods

Motorola, which is now owned by Lenovo, has arguably the best answer to the modular smartphone currently on the market. With modular parts that consist of speakers, camera enhancements, and even a projector, the Moto Mods have made a large impression. Add to that, the simplicity and elegance of the mods simply clipping on the back of the phone (as opposed to dismantling the phone like LG’s G5) and the success of these modular parts are no surprise. Lenovo recently announced that they aren’t stopping here and that they plan to release 12 new mods per year.

Although Motorola already has the aforementioned mods on the market, they say that the possibilities for mods are endless.

In an interview with CNET, Lenovo stated that it plans to launch Indiegogo campaigns to “drum up more developer interest.” Although they did not make it clear whether these ideas would be part of the 12  new mods per year or just additional mods, opening it up to the public certainly should bring some interesting ideas to the table.

Although it is great that Lenovo and Motorola are expanding the modular line, what they should also be working on is  getting the prices of these mods down. I, like many other consumers, feel that $300 for one of these mods is a bit too much to be spending on a phone addition just because it is cool.
