Hugh Jackman took pay cut to ensure Logan’s R rating

Making a movie R-rated is often a risky decision. After all, it’s limiting ticket sales to a smaller population while losing profit from those who aren’t able to purchase a ticket. That’s why the makers of many large blockbusters try to avoid the rating, especially since they have so much money invested in them. But sometimes a film needs an R-rating to tell its story properly. The makers of Deadpool realized this and their risky decision to produce R-rated content paid off as the film became a huge hit at the box office.

Shortly after that film’s release, there was speculation that the next Wolverine movie could also be rated R. It would make sense. Like Deadpool, Wolverine is a shockingly violent character who attracts similarly violent enemies. He’s a tortured soul who’s also been physically tortured numerous times. To really tell his story properly, you pretty much need an R rating. And that’s exactly what the new film, Logan, has received. Furthermore, Hugh Jackman himself helped make this happen.

Recently, at the 2016 Butt-Numb-A-Thon event, director James Mangold told attendees that Jackman actually sacrificed pay for an R-rating. According to Ain’t It Cool’s Eric Vespe, Mangold admitted the actor took a pay cut to make this happen. Initially, you might wonder why a pay cut would ensure the rating. Well, even though Deadpool was a hit, making an R-rated film is still risky and may indeed contribute to a loss of profit. However, paying Jackman less money means the movie doesn’t have to make as much through ticket sales to become financially successful.

The probability of that seems greater every day. Over the weekend, press outlet members were treated to an exclusive 40-minute preview of Logan and the clip received universal praise from those in attendance.

We’ll have to wait and see how the movie does when it premiers on March 3, 2017.
