So far, Rogue One has been taking the world by storm with its tale of a band of rebels taking on the juggernaut that is the Empire. I greatly enjoyed the film, as it was nothing short of stellar action and story. If you haven’t seen it yet or are unsure, check out our review. Now I should warn you as well that if you haven’t seen the film, you shouldn’t read any further because there are spoilers after this sentence.

For those that have seen it, you know how the story ends. How the rebels were able to get the plans to the Death Star. Obviously, securing those plans came at great cost, as many gave their lives for the greater good. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t supposed to be like this originally. In a recent interview with Empire, Gareth Edwards talks about what we might have seen at the end of the film before it was changed.

The very first version, they didn’t. In the screenplay. And it was just assumed by us that we couldn’t do that. ‘They’re not going to let us do that.’ So I was trying to figure out how this ends where that doesn’t happen. And then everyone read that and there was this feeling of like, ‘They’ve got to die, right?’ And everyone was like, ‘Yeah, can we?’

We thought we weren’t going to be allowed to but Kathy [Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm] and everyone at Disney were like ‘Yeah it makes sense/ I guess they have to because they’re not in A New Hope.’ And so from that point on we had the license.

I kept waiting for someone to go, ‘You know what? Could we just film an extra scene where we see Jyn and Cassian, they’re okay and they’re on another planet?’ And it never came. No one ever gave us that note, so we got to do it.

Wow, that would have made a huge difference. I can say that I’m quite glad the ending was changed, as it was for the better. It really would have taken away from the impact of the film had there been survivors. What do you think? Was it the right decision to have the ending the way we saw it in the theater, or would you have rather seen the original ending? Let us know in the comments below.
