Game of Thrones is arguably the most successful show on television right now. Not only does it win countless awards, but it’s beloved by millions and may be the closest thing we have to a ‘water cooler show’, ‘appointment television’ or ‘must see TV’ today. So, it’s no surprise that, once again, the HBO program has been ranked as the most torrented television show of 2016, earning that honor for its fifth consecutive year.
This is according to Torrent Freak, which also reports that the show is by far the most pirated TV series by fans on BitTorrent, a fact that probably isn’t sitting well with the people at HBO. At its peak, more than 350,000 people were searching for the torrented files of the most recent season finale of Game of Thrones.
HBO had another series rank high on the list, but it’s not a show that’s been on nearly as long as Game of Thrones. Westworld made a name for itself in the world of pop culture incredibly quickly following its premiere this fall, also receiving praise from both TV audiences and critics. Surprisingly, the new show ranked number three on the list of 2016’s most torrented programs.
