Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise failed to transition well into the modern 3D era, with the exception of a few gems such as Sonic Colors on the Wii. Luckily though, like Square Enix and their major RPG franchises, Sega worked on making their classic 16-bit era Sonic games available on Android and iOS, as well other notable titles.
This writer owns an Android phone, so the rundown below will focus on Sega Android games. Keep them in mind when receiving those Google Play gift cards for Christmas!
1. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($2.99)
Similar to Final Fantasy VII, the wide majority of fans consider the second Sonic installment as the best one in the series, and one of the greatest games anyone can own. Remember when the original cartridge cost $60?
Pros: Polished gameplay. Great variety of levels, including the secret Hidden Palace Zone! Option to play as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. Save feature. Incredible value for those who have not tried the game yet.
Cons: User reviews indicate problems with the 2-player mode.
2. Sonic the Hedgehog ($2.99)
The first Sonic was successful too, of course, but falls just short of the top slot. It did launch the character into our hearts and minds, and helped the Sega Genesis as a popular pack-in title during the 16-bit console wars.
Pros: Spin dash move added. Same fun levels as the original. Colorful menu. Unlockable Tails and Knuckles. Save feature. Incredible value.
Cons: Levels not as memorable as sequel. Issues with sound test menu.
3. Sonic 4 Episode II ($2.99)
Less fans even know an official Sonic 4 exists (many assume Sonic and Knuckles was the official No. 4). Nevertheless, this is a solid “modern” take on the old series style and deserves consideration for purchase.
Pros: Gorgeous graphics. Levels capture the feel of the old Sega Genesis titles. Tails is given greater importance.
Cons: Certain parts requiring Tails are too hard. Spin dash difficult to pull off at times.
4. Crazy Taxi Classic ($4.99)
Crazy Taxi earns a spot on the list with a bit of hesitation, as reviewers are complaining about a lack of compatibility. Still, two main Crazy Taxi games on Google Play exist, and if this one works then it is by far the better game.
Pros: Perfect game for on-the-go players. Beautiful city to drive around (blend of San Francisco and Los Angeles). Original soundtrack featuring The Offspring and Bad Religion.
Cons: Lacks depth after playing for a while. Game might not start on certain versions of Android.
5. Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing ($3.99)
Unfortunately, the Mario Kart franchise will never come to smartphones, so kart racing fans will need to settle for Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing. There are worse ways to kill time.
Pros: Driving games are great for people waiting in line. Beautiful tracks. Touch and tilt control options.
Cons: A bit shallow. Problems with online play. Not as good as Mario Kart.
