With the new Blade Runner 2049 teaser trailer now out, there’s a lot of questions being raised about various topics regarding the original film. One of the biggest, being about whether or not Harrison Ford is a replicant.
Now, I have seen a few things floating around about Ryan Gosling’s character only dreaming about Rick Deckard, but there is no way to know that for sure. By the looks of it and the short bit of him we see in the trailer, there is honestly no possible way to really see if Gosling is dreaming or not. We know that the new movie stars both Gosling and Ford, but if you know anything about the previous film, you’d realize that Deckard, the ex-detective we follow, has been missing for thirty years.
Even throughout the original film, we witness plenty of moments that could lead Deckard to actually being a replicant. Take for example: (spoilers ahead)
Deckard has a conversation with Rachael about her memories not being real.
“Implants. Those aren’t your memories, they’re somebody else’s. They’re Tyrell’s niece’s.”
Later, when Deckard falls asleep at his piano, he has a dream about a unicorn. At a later time, Gaff, leaves an origami unicorn outside Deckard’s house, implying that he knows something about Deckard that he doesn’t. This is followed by a line:
Rick Deckard: Replicants are like any other machine. They’re either a benefit or a hazard.
Gaff: Its too bad she wont live, but then again who does?
If memories are implanted within the minds of replicants to make them feel as if they’re real people, and Gaff knows that Deckard dreamed about a unicorn although Deckard never mentioned that he did to Gaff, who’s to say that Gaff doesn’t somehow know that all of Deckard’s memories and dreams are being implanted? This would lead you believe that like other replicants, Deckard’s life isn’t as authentic as it seems, making him just like Rachael.
On top of this, it also implies that replicants sometimes are not aware of the fact that they’re replicants. So how could Deckard possibly know whether or not he is one? He is very aware of the fact replicants have carbon copied memories, and can live normal lives for four years, but he has no way to prove to himself that he isn’t one.
To add to that, take into consideration that replicants only live for four years. (For the Nexus 6 type.) Since the film ends and Deckard goes missing, there’s no way to tell whether or not he’s still alive. This raises the question of Deckard being a replicant because he could have died at his four years (whenever that was).
Unfortunately, that’s all we get before the movie ends. As most good films, a cliffhanger leaving us in question about what we just watched, we are left with a massive, unanswered possibility. Now that we’re getting a second part to it all, will we find out whether or not Deckard really IS alive and missing, or possibly even in hiding, or if he’s dead because he really was a replicant all along, or from some other cause.
The trailer obviously gives us one clue: we see Deckard at some point. But because we don’t know whether or not this is a dream, as there’s nothing really to support this theory, we have no idea if we’re ACTUALLY seeing him. After all, I don’t think the trailer would just openly admit to him still being alive or hiding, but we don’t really know.
