The anticipation for the Assassin’s Creed film is almost over, and fans (including myself) can’t wait. Luckily, the Assassin’s Creed movie soundtrack was released today to help satiate your craving. Now if you’re anything like me that have played all the games, you’ve probably come to know and love the many great composers of the franchise. And if you’re not too familiar, here’s a quick rundown: Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed 1 – Revelations), Lorne Balfe (Assassin’s Creed III), Brian Tyler (Black Flag), Ryan Amon (Unity), and Austin Wintory (Syndicate).
With such a high caliber pedigree of scores under the franchises’ belt, one would come to have high expectations for the soundtrack to the very first film. All I can say is that it definitely hits every mark and more. Jed Kurzel took the reigns for scoring duties on the film and exceeds what we would have hoped to be a good soundtrack. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because he also did the score for the movie Macbeth, which also happens to star Michael Fassbender. Another great coincidence is that his brother Justin Kurzel also directed both films as well.
The soundtrack echoes most closely with that of the Jesper Kyd scores from the first four games, whether intentional or not. There’s a great dynamic range from subtle ambiance to heart-pumping crescendos that keeps your ears enthralled to the max. Kurzel does a great job of painting the film through the music in a way that you can close your eyes and just picture every scene on a film you even have yet to see. Overall, I give much kudos to him and his team for delivering a soundtrack that’s on par with all the others that have come before. Now the only thing left is to see if Assassin’s Creed will finally break the mold that is bad video game films.
