MARY, MARY, QUITE CONTRARY
Tensions begin to grow between the devil and his brother as the Sentinel begins to question the Devil’s motives. He assures his brother he intends to keep Mary alive as his bride. Instead of killing her, the Sentinel begins to torture her. He traps her soul into a boxed room where she is constantly faced with her demons. In the end, she is faced with her reckoning from the Devil and the Sentinel. They strip her of her powers that they gave her in one of the most fantastic scenes I’ve seen from the series, which is saying a lot because they have had amazing scenes on this show. They kill her familiar and take her power of Earth, water, air, and fire. She is left completely human.
This was the second most unexpected scene in this episode (continue down to see what was the most) because Mary has always had her powers and dominated the game, even against Marburg. To strip Mary of her powers is like stripping someone’s identity. I’m not sure what is going to happen next, but the only way I see her having an out is if she convinces Sebastian to help her, which won’t be hard.
COTTON IS OUT
After a night of passion, Cotton begins to plot a potion to remove the familiar from his body. He tries to hide the ingredients as he pretends to still be in love with Anne. They begin to travel outside together in the village with Anne telling him she’d like to do something for the refugees – charity work. He continues to woo her with his words. He gets a moment away from her and is able to obtain the ingredients to the spell. He drinks it during the town meeting and begins to feel the effects, but holds off until he finishes his speech about keeping the refugees. He later runs to the bathroom and pukes out Mr. Brown Jenkins and kills him (you know, he ain’t dead). He runs off afterward. Anne finds Mr. Brown Jenkins in the woods and realizes Cotton has escaped her clutches.
Let’s be honest. Cotton is a pretty good liar for someone who is a man of God. He seems to always have everything planned out – except when he finally does escape. It makes you wonder if he could survive out there in a world filled with witches.
UNEXPECTED LOVE
Hawthorne begins to deteriorate from the spell cast by Mercy. She shows him mercy and provides a temporary cure. They begin a shocking romantic relationship, which if you think about it – it makes a lot of sense. These two are truly lost souls who selfishly just want to survive and live well. If you truly think about it – they were really meant for each other. I completely support this newfound and most unexpected relationship.
After chatting with Elise Eberle about this newfound love, we agreed on a shipper name – #MERTHORNE. We thought about #Hawcy, but we figured Mercy should always be in front because she’s in charge.
WHEN ART REFLECTS LIFE
An explosion in the distance occurs. Bright red lights are shown at a distance in the town of Deerfield, scaring the townspeople. Ash begins to fall over them – the ashes of cremated bodies. Alden wants to check the field, but the chosen men want him and the men to stay to protect the town. One of the townsmen demands that the town gets rid of the refugees and protect the people living here. You know he’s going to be trouble.
The parallels between Salem and the world today seems pretty scary. The series was filmed and completed months ago and yet, all of this is relevant to today. To be honest, the episode showcasing Tituba seeing the future with destruction couldn’t have come at a more convenient time.
ALDEN HAS A GROUPIE
Alden takes Billy, who we learned is secretly a woman in the last episode, to the site of the explosion and she begins to tell him the story of the Great John Alden that is being shared everywhere. They find the town obliterated and French men still around. Alden tells her to hide but notices she climbed into their wagon.
It’s becoming clearer what Billy’s role is on the show. She finds hope in Alden to save the day. Singing his ballads and fighting by his side has proven to us that Alden means hope. He’s a hero and I think she is reminding him of that.
BACK TO SQUARE ONE
Isaac confronts Hawthorne about the death of the man in the first episode. Hawthorne brushes him off after Isaac accuses Mercy of the murder. Poor Isaac has been placed to square one. He asks Cotton for help, but Cotton, fearing getting caught, tells Isaac to stay away from witches at all costs. During his night watch, he is confronted by Mercy’s men who begin to beat him. He is left half dead and returns to his home angry. The little girl he saved tends to him and brings him some hope. This scene was definitely needed because it provided us some sort of hope for Isaac during his lowest point. We don’t want our Isaac to revert back to poor Isaac. He finally has someone who believes in him and I pray to God, I hope she doesn’t get killed.
THE TRUTH IS REVEALED
Sebastian has been assigned to deliver Red Mercury to the French from The Sentinel, which were made of angel tears, and caused the explosion in Deerfield. We discovered the ultimate plan from the devil. He wants to start a war between the French and England, which would last for many years. With the destruction of Salem, the war would be initiated. Damn. So that’s how they want to play this.
Salem airs every Wednesday at 9pm on WGN America.
