Plox’s Death Star Levitating Bluetooth Speaker review

ds_6

A few weeks ago, Plox dropped news that was so big, it was as if millions of voices suddenly cheered in joy, but they weren’t silenced. And what floated in front of us was no ordinary speaker, but instead the Death Star Levitating Bluetooth Speaker. There have been many decorative Star Wars items in the past, some more exciting than others, and even several Death Star speakers in the past. Plox, however, really set the bar high with its creative take on the Death Star. The fact that it levitates and plays music is a huge selling point in itself and makes for a nice decorative piece on any one’s desk.

Specs

  • Gravity-defying orb rotates above the magnetic base
  • 360° uncompromising sound quality
  • Up to 5 hours of continuous playback on Bluetooth
  • Powerful 5w speaker

Upon first unboxing the speaker, the Death Star Speaker itself seems a bit fragile but has some weight to it that keeps it upright. Placing it on the magnetic base takes a bit of practice, and it comes with a plastic guide that helps you put it in the right placement to levitate. Once in place, it’ll either naturally slowly spin or you can slightly spin it yourself and it’ll never stop. I tried this by having it spin and left it for a few hours. Once I came back it was still spinning and appeared to be at the same speed when I left. The speaker offers great sound with sound coming from several sides of the Death Star. This helps deliver great sound as it spins without sounding as if the sound is being thrown or blocked.

The Death Star Speaker also acts as a stand-alone Bluetooth speaker and can be taken anywhere for mobile music. The magnetic base is only needed to keep it afloat and has no influence on the sound itself. It easily fits in the palm of your hand, but that’s also a bad thing. There is nothing to attach the speaker to, meaning that you are left always holding it when not on its base. Also, the Death Star Speaker doesn’t have any controls other than a power button on it which limits the control down to your music player or phone. If you plan on just leaving it on its stand and play music on occasion, then the controls aren’t necessary at all.

Final Reaction

With tons of Star Wars decorative items cluttering your desk, there’s bound to be some room to squeeze in the Death Star Levitating Bluetooth Speaker. As it sits, it’s an amazing piece that captures the presence of the Death Star. Adding in the ability to play music via Bluetooth, and it raises the bar on what to expect. Plox had a huge task when first designing it, seeing as the Death Star is as memorable as it comes. Despite that it functions as a mobile Bluetooth speaker, the Death Star Levitating Bluetooth Speaker is meant to stay on its magnetic base, and it’s not entirely a bad thing either. It’s a must own for any Star Wars fan and one that will be on everyone’s list this coming Holiday Season.
