Widely seen as a show for girls during its original run, Gilmore Girls has a wider reach than what one might think. The mother-daughter dramedy, which lasted for seven seasons (2000-2007), combines the usual relationship drama with quick-talking banter and quirky characters in the storybook town of Stars Hollow.

To the delight of fans, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) return on Netflix this Friday with four new 90-minute episodes titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Netflix, also known for hosting the Full House sequel Fuller House, is slowly becoming a safe place to bring back old television favorites.

Less people might be familiar with Gilmore Girls though, so here is a recap (possible spoilers ahead).

Lorelai Gilmore grew up in a rich Connecticut family and became pregnant at a young age. She ran away with her child Rory to Stars Hollow, and eventually made a decent life for herself by managing an inn.

Meanwhile, Rory started off her high school career in a public school, but Lorelai decided she wanted a better life for Rory, so she placed Rory in a prestigious private school named Chilton.

The catch is, despite her job at the inn, Lorelai needed to borrow money in order for Rory to attend Chilton. This meant Lorelai had to reconnect with her mother, Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop), as well as Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann). Throughout the series, the four characters participate in Friday night dinners.

Lorelai progresses towards building her own inn from scratch and managing it. Her love interest also becomes the “coffee shop guy” named Luke (Scott Patterson), and their chemistry works especially well.

The show was known during its run for making references to current events and pop culture, as in Season 6 Episode 2, when the show opened with a dialogue between Luke and Lorelai about Star Wars. In the same episode later on, Luke claimed the “high ground” while standing on a ladder next to Lorelai’s house.

Of course, there were not so fun moments in the Luke/Lorelai relationship too. The Netflix episodes are going to explore their complicated relationship further, and viewers will see if the pair can finally tie the knot.

As for Rory, her career as a journalist stalled as well after graduating from Yale, and the new episodes will follow her path to finding herself as an adult. Old boyfriends from the past (Logan, Jess and Dean) appear too.

Tragically, Edward Herrmann, who had a long and distinguished career, died before the show began filming again. The new episodes are expected to honor him.

Besides the revival, Lorelai and Rory are also set to appear as Funko Pop! figures in December.

Get ready for more snappy dialogue and drama mixed with comedic moments. Gilmore Girls is back this week.
