Although the 1995 film Mortal Kombat was a big hit at a time in the mid-’90s when the games were even more popular, the franchise hasn’t been able to recreate the success of that first silver screen adaptation. Attempts have been made, though, and they’re still being made as New Line intends to reboot the movie series in the near future. In fact, Australian filmmaker Simon McQuoid, best known for his work on commercials for products like PlayStation, Halo, Range Rover and Beats by Dre, is in talks to direct the reboot.
The development of a new film has been made possible, in part, by the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Plans for Mortal Kombat related projects were shelved after the financial failure of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, a film that holds a 3% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the series was revived after Warner Bros. Digital, which was run by current Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara, premiered the web series.
McQuoid is one of the most demanded commercial directors working today. His work has earned him a Grand Clio, a D&AD Pencil, and a GRANDY Award, among others.
James Wan will produce the film along with Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear. Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein will also produce through their Broken Road banner while Lawrence Kasanoff will executive produce. The most recent draft of the film was penned by Greg Russo.
