If you care for innovation, then buy Titanfall 2

This Fall season of gaming has not and will not see a shortage in the shooter department. Games like Gears of War 4 and Battlefield 1 have already been met with financial and critical praise and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will no doubt sell despite the internet’s backlash. However, in the midst of all these big franchises, there was a relatively new one that was thrown into the lion pit, and that was Titanfall 2.

Nerd Reactor gave the game a 4.5 out of 5 and rightfully so. With the inclusion of a single-player campaign and expanding on the multiplayer that made the first Titanfall so great, it became one of the must-have shooters of not only this year, but this generation. The aforementioned titles (Gears 4, Battlefield 1have received great reviews from critics and the public as well (I personally wasn’t a fan of Battlefield 1, but that’s beside the point) but they don’t bring a whole lot of new ideas to the table. Of course, a game does not ALWAYS have to do anything new to be great, but when a game does something new and becomes great because of it, then that is a cause for celebration!

What is the “new” that I’m referring to exactly? For one, I’ve always been a stickler for a good single-player campaign as there haven’t been many of them in the past few years. Titanfall 2 has a pretty standard story, but the level design is what makes it truly amazing. The parkour changes the way the player interacts with the environment, and it makes them think harder about where they need to go. It’s kind of like a platformer in a sense. While there is nothing wrong with the traditional linear setup of most shooter campaigns, Titanfall 2 takes it to the next level.

Online multiplayer is the big selling point in the Titanfall franchise. I mean, the first one was multiplayer-only so you would hope it’d be good. The game continues to succeed in that portion in the sequel, with more custom loadouts for each Pilot and Titan along with the smooth controls that are easy to use. Someone asked me if Titanfall 2 would be good for them even if they suck at online shooters. As someone who isn’t the worst but far from the best at other online shooters, I told them yes. There is a small learning curve for new players (which is why I recommend they play the single player first) but you might easily become addicted in no time like I have. Getting a Titan is easy in most game modes, especially Bounty Hunt and Attrition with the AI grunts perfect for target-practice and getting the desired scorestreak to earn your mechanized giant. You’ll feel like a badass once you hop in to the cockpit.

Did I mention that there are no Season Passes and Free DLC?! That is a rarity, especially from a publisher like EA.

This isn’t necessarily a review for the game (if you want you can read our official review), but rather a suggestion from gamer to gamer. I can without a doubt say that Titanfall 2 is one of the most fun and innovative games I have played in the past few years, and it’s a damn shame to see that it isn’t performing as well as it should, at least in the UK. GfK Chart-Track has reported that sales of physical copies of the game took the Number 4 spot this week and GameIndustry claimed that the launch sales were “barely a quarter” of the original. You would think a single-player campaign and multi-platform release would’ve helped.

I’m a firm believer in speaking with your wallet. If you want games to stop including something like microtransactions, stop buying those games. If you want to see more games include certain elements, buy games that already include them. Titanfall 2 is one of the games that REEK of pure innovation, and innovation is something that you as a gamer should care about in this industry.

Seriously. Buy Titanfall 2. I can’t recommend it enough.
