“Easy Street” by The Collapsable Hearts Club was featured heavily in the third episode of The Walking Dead’s seventh season. When I say heavily, I really do mean it.

(Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen it.)

The song was played over and over again to torture Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), who was punished for pissing off Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) during season 7’s premiere.

Songwriter Jim Bianco teamed up with singer Petra Haden to produce a fun and catchy song, but it had a different context in the show’s episode, “The Cell.” The song was trending on Twitter and many YouTubers shared their thoughts on the song, including us. The song reached #6 on iTunes Pop Songs Chart. You can also check out some of the memes here.

Bianco said, “I knew the moment The Walking Dead requested our song EASY STREET it would be used with some irony. With such an upbeat, obnoxiously pop-y hook and positive lyrics, there’s no way to sync it with a zombie apocalypse without sarcasm and satire. So we were expecting that. And overall, we felt honored to be a part of such clever use of music in such a cool show. But I have to say, when EASY STREET came on and Daryl, the biggest badass on TV, was laying there being tortured and eating dog food sandwiches, even I hated the song for a minute!”

So whose idea was it to use the song in the episode? It was showrunner Scott Gimple.

Gabe Hilfer, Music Supervisor for The Walking Dead, said, “The origin of this song in The Walking Dead came from Scott (Gimple – the Executive Producer) wanting to play the juxtaposition of a very happy, feel good, child-like song over and over in a torture-like manor. It can get tricky finding a song which fits the desired aesthetic, while making sure the songwriter and performer are okay with the content of the scene. After searching long and hard, we came across ‘Easy Street’ and it fit the bill perfectly. Once Scott heard it, he agreed and the rest is history!”

You can listen to the song on Spotify here.

And if you want to learn the lyrics, check them out below.

We’re on easy street
And it feels so sweet
Cause the world is but a treat
When you’re on easy street

And we’re breaking out the good champagne
We’re sitting pretty on the gravy train
And when we sing every sweet refrain
Right here on easy street

It’s our moment in the sun
And it’s only just begun
It’s time to have a little fun
We’re inviting you to come and see why you should be
On easy street

Yea we got a front row seat
O, to a life that can’t be beat
Right here on easy street
It’s our moment in the sun
And it’s only just begun

It’s time to have a little fun
And we’re inviting you to come
and see why you should be
On easy street

Yea we got a front row seat
O, to a life that can’t be beat
Right here on easy street
Cause the world is but a treat
When you’re on easy street
‘Cos the world is but a treat
When you’re on easy street
