Gamers with access to EA Access and/or Origin Access will be able to get a head start on Battlefield 1 with the Play First Trial going live on October 13th. There will be 10 hours of playtime including 5 maps and 4 modes along with the “Storm of Steel” prologue and “Through Mud and Blood” War Story. (The final game will have a total of 5 War Stories and the Storm of Steel prologue.)
Modes
There will be four multiplayer modes for Play First Trials. The full game will have a total of 6.
Operations
This is one of my favorite modes because it actually feels like an actual war. The operations are based on real World War I battles with one team defending and the other capturing. Players will be moving from one map to another, depending on whether they are successful in defending or capturing the areas. If you’re able to proceed to the other map, you can see the previous one on the horizon.
Conquest
If you have played the beta for Battlefield 1, then you’ve got a taste of what the game’s Conquest is all about. You’re thrown into a large battlefield with 64 players on a mission to take over key objectives across the map. Players will be able to fight on foot, maneuver tanks, and go behind the wheel inside the Behemoth vehicles.
Rush
Here’s another mode where we have two teams either defending or attacking. Instead of capturing an area, the attackers are tasked with finding and destroying the Telegraph Posts belonging to the Attack team. Defenders will be able to call in artillery strikes using the posts, but if they are destroyed, the Defenders must retreat to another sector. If all the Posts are destroyed in all the sectors, the Attackers win. Defenders win by having at least one Post still left standing when the match ends, or when the Attackers no longer have reinforcements.
Domination
If the large maps aren’t to your liking in Conquest, then Domination is definitely for you. Domination is a scaled-down version of Conquest and features more up-and-close battles.
Maps
There are 9 maps in the final game, but players will get a chance to test out 5 in the Play First Trials multiplayer:
St. Quentin Scar
This once peaceful land in Northern France has definitely seen battle. Players will fight in trenches, on the farm, and in the village.
Amiens
For fans of urban/suburban maps, Amiens is just the one for them. The French city is filled with streets, alleys, lots of buildings, bridges and railways. This is where the Germans and British will fight for control.
Sinai Desert
Those who have played the open beta will recognize the Sinai Desert. It’s a big open desert with the cliff on the side and the village of Bir el Mazar. The Behemoth armored train will help turn the tide for players in need.
Fao Fortress
Soldiers will battle in and around the Ottoman fortress of Fao on the beach. It’s the fight for oil as the British Empire has its eyes set on the Al-Faw Peninsula. The area outside is pretty open, so it’s best to find some cover inside the fortress.
Suez
For a change in scenery, players will be fighting on the Egyptian canal in the desert. The Ottoman Empire is looking to raid the canal, but they’ll be met with resistance from the British.
Players will also have a variety of weapons and classes to choose from. Here’s the list of classes:
- Assault – Equipped with explosives. Good for close quarters.
- Support – Good for close and medium-range combat. Can help teammates with resupplying and protecting positions.
- Medic – Can help keep teammates healthy and repair vehicles. Good for medium-range combat.
- Scout/Recon – Great for long range thanks to the use of sniper rifles. Can also provide reconnaissance.
Single-player Content
Prologue: Storm of Steel
Players will get a taste of the single-player content, and the first one is the short prologue: Storm of Steel. They will experience the brutality of war as members of the Harlem Hellfighter and witness people dying left and right.
War Story: Through Mud and Blood
You’ll play as Danny Edwards, a British tasked with driving Big Bess, a deadly Mark V tank… and somewhat unreliable. Your tank crew will help you fend off attackers as you travel to occupied areas to capture them.
The mission does a nice job of balancing driving a tank and scouting on foot. When on foot, you have the option of killing the enemies with stealth, or go all out with guns blazing.
Battlefield 1 Play First Trials will be live on October 13th via EA Access on Xbox One and Origin Access. The full game will launch on October 21st.
