If you’ve been following the events of Dragon Ball Super, it is currently in the middle of the Black Goku saga. Throughout the series, from the beginning up to now, we’ve seen major transformations from the characters. When Dragon Ball Super first started, we were under the impression that Goku and Vegeta were basically the first and second strongest fighters of the universe. Looks like we were dead wrong on that assumption. They took down global and galactic-wide threats during Dragon Ball Z, all while they were using different versions of the Super Saiyan transformations. When Goku transformed into Super Saiyan 3 back in the day, the entire world quaked. His ki was felt everywhere and we all thought nothing could stop this final form – until Lord Beerus arrived.
In Dragon Ball Super, Toriyama has inserted the characters into the realm of gods and time. This was a brilliant move since now he could create different opponents for Goku and Vegeta to tackle. However, for them to tackle these new opponents, Toriyama introduced a realm beyond Super Saiyan 1 through 3. In fact, it looks like Toriyama ditched the whole numbering sequence and started giving us the different spectrum of the rainbow. The original Super Saiyan transformation was blonde, but in the movie Battle of the Gods, Toriyama showed us the Super Saiyan God transformation which turned Goku’s hair red.
The Super Saiyan God transformation was fairly short-lived once the Dragon Ball Super series went underway. After the intense training that Goku and Vegeta immersed themselves in with Whis, the new transformation that was conceived with this plot hook was the all new Super Saiyan Blue. The reasoning to this was that the fighters were now infused with not just their own ki, but the ki of the gods as well. I think it looks pretty damned cool.
Toriyama didn’t waste time having both these Saiyans sitting around with this much power. This is why he introduced the tournament of the gods as the next saga in the series. During the whole tournament with Lord Beerus’ champions versus that of Lord Champa’s champions, we saw the power differences between the opponents that Goku and Vegeta have fought compared to other universes. The character that pushed Goku to go beyond Super Saiyan Blue was his opponent named Hit. In the early episodes of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Goku originally had an ability called kaio-ken that enhanced all his physical fighting abilities. This was one of the moves that Goku used to boost his power up to take out Vegeta during the end of the Saiyan Saga in Dragon Ball Z. Apparently this move was never to be used at the same time during a Super Saiyan transformation because of the tremendous amount of stress it has on the body, but that didn’t matter at this point. Goku decided to fuse Super Saiyan Blue and kaio-ken together, and it became a beautiful combination (I personally think, this change was the reason Toriyama ditched the Super Saiyan God-Red color). Unfortunately for Vegeta, he cannot attain this transformation since he was never trained to utilize kaio-ken.
You’d think that after all these different transformations, Toriyama would say that’s enough, right? Wrong. Now that we’re deep in the Black Goku Saga, all of us know by now that evil Black Goku is basically the Kaioshin Zamasu. Because Zamasu is a god, his ki is now infused with Goku’s body and abilities making him the ultimate super being that is Black Goku. Just like the Saiyans Goku and Vegeta, every time he gets beat up, his power grows that much more when he recovers. We were all waiting to see what transformation Black Goku would become and we didn’t have to wait long for that. Toriyama decided to go with the French pink colored wine, Rosé. Better aptly named: Super Saiyan Rosé.
Oh, we’re not done yet. The most current episode of Dragon Ball Super that was released was episode 61. As I said, we’re deep in the Black Goku Saga already and future Trunks is one of the main players in this saga. Future Trunks is one of the main reasons why Goku and Vegeta eventually reached Ascended Saiyan then to Super Saiyan 2 during the Cell Saga in Dragon Ball Z. In this last episode, it looks like Toriyama is finally taking Trunks to the main stage to take on Black Goku because he’s now changed him as well. It is a known fact that Trunks is half-human and half-saiyan, just like Gohan. This is all the more reason why both him and Gohan have the potential to become stronger than their fathers. At this current point in the story, I believe that the training that future Trunks has immersed himself in with his father, the emotional trauma, and the pain inflicted on him by Black Goku, has finally led him to transform into something different. A fusion of his half-blood ki with the god ki. I don’t know what to call this transformation. Super Saiyan Blue and Yellow? One can only guess what Toriyama is going to come up with next.
