Indiana Jones 5 storyline should be a dark adventure

It’s been stated by Disney that Indiana Jones 5 is already on the pre-production slate and that David Koepp, who has worked with Steven Spielberg in the past, would be handling a majority of the scripting burden for this upcoming flick. George Lucas was once heavily involved with the past Indiana Jones movies; however, the current change seems to be a step in a new direction for Disney. Now that Koepp is calling the shots for the script, he was asked what they learned from the last iteration: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

“I think that what [Indy] looks for and when he looks for it dictates what the movie’s gonna be. So the selection of the MacGuffin is everything. I think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, being set in 1957 there was a conscious desire to say, ‘Much like two of the other ones were World War II movies set in the 30s and early 40s, this is ’57 so a lot of our influences are gonna be science-fiction movies.’ You got that with the original [script], Jeb Stuart took the first shot at it with Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men from Mars. That was a really conscious decision that dictated a lot about what the story would be and what the movie would be like, and I think that was followed through on really nicely. I thought Steve did a really good job with that. I don’t know that the idea was most suited to an Indiana Jones movie, but that was what we did. So we tried to be very careful with the selection of the MacGuffin and the eras to give ourselves as much latitude to make the best kind of Indiana Jones movie that we most want to see. Learning how that’s the importance of the choice of the MacGuffin is a big deal.”

Indiana Jones is one of those film franchises that takes us back to a simpler time of adventure while searching for treasure. Even though a big portion of the world during the character’s time (1930s and 1940s) was civilized, it wasn’t connected like it is today. This is one of the main reasons why it was such a successful franchise in the past. There was that allure of these unknown lands; places across the globe were spoken about in text only and the pictures of these locations weren’t plentiful.

If Koepp can follow this same formula, at the same time give us an intriguing new MacGuffin to follow, I think it would be a smash hit. In fact, I personally think Indiana Jones 5 should traverse a darker route this time around. As much as I love the different artifacts from around the globe, how about a storyline where Indy searches for the Lost Colony of Roanoke disappeared to. Imagine the adventure, the suspense, and the scares that they could write about with this dark part of United States history. Whatever they choose to write about, I just hope that Koepp can keep that base concept of adventure alive in the this updated version of Indiana Jones. Because truthfully? Not a lot of hardcore Indiana Jones fans liked that last movie. Something to think about, Koepp and Spielberg.
