What would happen tomorrow if all life-threatening disease and illness just disappeared?

Our world is polluted with so much death and disease, viruses that are able to spread through the air or just from contact with another person or animal, it’s truly a wonder we have survived for so long. But imagine for a second, a world where no such illnesses existed. A place where we wouldn’t have to worry about cancer, pneumonia, STDs, etc… In this world, no one would ever die of natural causes or from any sort of life-threatening illness. What a world that might be.

This is the concept of Healed, a comic series created by Homeless Comics. Healed takes this concept, where all life-threatening illness and disease sudden cease to exist, and focuses on how the world reacts from such an event. The question is raised, “What now?” as the world tries to cope with this unique twist on immortality. While at first it might sound like a good thing, but pretty soon Healed has its readers thinking twice about whether or not this is a world we might actually want to live in.

What could possibly be so bad about a world without illness or disease?

Well for one, population control. The sudden disappearance of life-threatening illnesses will cause the mortality rate to plummet. Death is a nasty subject, yet Healed does an amazing job of bringing light to something that no one really wants to think about. Death keeps the population size under control. An increase in population means there is in increase in the amount of resources that the population needs. Food is a huge issue, the sudden increase in population will drastically affect our sources of food. If world hunger was bad before, imagine it across the globe.

There are so many jobs that are in certain ways dependent on illness and disease. Hospitals and medical companies will no longer be needed to treat disease as they were before. This could cause the unemployment rate to increase, which will negatively impact the economy.

There are countless individuals who have come to terms with their own mortality, possibly giving away everything that had meaning to them, racking up expensive bills that they no longer had to worry about, maybe even believing that they are about to join long lost loved ones in the afterlife. This huge event changes all that in an instant, leaving these individuals in their frail bodies having to now deal with the consequences of surviving.

While those are all bad enough, Healed stresses that the worst thing about a world without illness is that we are still technically not immortal. Without disease and infection, death becomes unnatural and man-made. People die the most violent and brutal deaths. The first episode of Healed introduces this as a priest blows up a church full of people.

The creators of Healed, George O’Conner and Griffin Ess of Homeless Comics, have created 5 Issues of Healed to date, each containing 3 stories of different individuals and how they are dealing with the situation. Healed can be purchased from Amazon and is even available through Comixology.
