The Star Trek Mission New York convention is finally here and begins today at the Javits Center in Manhattan, New York. The convention runs from today through Sunday and features tons of guests, activities, and fun for fans.
The convention features some 34 actors and entertainment guests and 65 special guests. William Shatner and Walter Koenig will be appearing from The Original Series. They will be joined by Kate Mulgrew (VOY), Nana Visitor (DS9), and dozens of fellow Trek actors who have contributed to the Trek universe. Adam Nimoy, son of the late Leonard Nimoy, and Rod Roddenberry, son of the late Gene Roddenberry, will also be there carrying the torch and honoring their family names.
One of the unique aspects of the convention is the number of special guests. These are folks who were inspired in some way by the world of Trek and live out the virtues of exploration, science, and diversity in their own lives. Bobak Ferdowsi, a member of the Flight Systems Engineering team of Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will be giving a panel on Saturday. Cici James, a co-founder of Singularity and Company, an independent science fiction book store will appear as a panelist discussing the evolution of Star Trek fans. An amazing team of guests from doctors to astronauts will be appearing to share about how Trek has intersected with their personal and professional lives.
Fans can navigate the convention using the official Star Trek Mission New York mobile app. The app helps you to build your own convention schedule by selecting the panels and signings you wish to attend. Aside from a very useful map, list of exhibitors, and show specials, it also offers a social media component where attendees can post and share their favorite moments and pictures of the day.
Trekkies will also have unofficial evening events to attend to continue the Trek celebration. On Saturday night, O’Lunney’s on 45th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue will be hosting an unofficial social for Star Trek fans which will include karaoke and Trek-themed drinks and food starting at 9pm. They will also be offering 10% off menu items for fans with a convention badge or appearing in costume. On Sunday the New York City Star Trek Meetup Group will be hosting fans at Stone Creek Bar 140 E 27th St. New York, NY. The event will include music, dancing, and giveaways. The events are free for all to attend.
