The drunken master has now struck Oscar gold. The Academy of Motion Picture announced yesterday that longtime actor and martial arts expert Jackie Chan will receive a lifetime achievement Oscar this year.
Chan will be honored alongside British editor Anne V Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster and documentary maker Frederick Wiseman. Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs in a statement called them all “true pioneers and legends in their crafts.”
After a long and illustrious career that saw him seemingly escape death and dismemberment hundreds of times, Chan is about to receive the ultimate symbol of success for his storied career. Chan has starred in dozens of movies since he first began acting at the age of eight, but his breakout in the US is no doubt his three collaborations with Chris Tucker in the wildly popular Rush Hour series.
But lest this be some sort of sign that Chan is planning on retiring, don’t count out the 62-year-old actor just yet. He is still actively making films, having just starred in the buddy comedy Skiptrace alongside Johnny Knoxville.
