Lin-Manuel Miranda’s slow and steady domination of all things Disney continues this week.
After already signing on to star in Disney’s Mary Poppins reboot, and penning all the songs in Disney’s upcoming Moana, Deadline reported today that Miranda will be teaming up with legendary songwriter/composer Alan Menken on Disney’s live-action reboot of The Little Mermaid. His involvement is still being worked out but Miranda will be serving as songwriter and producer of the film along with serving as story supervisor. The remake is being orchestrated as a mix of pre-existing songs from the 1989 Disney animated film, for which Menken won two Oscars, and the new songs that Miranda and Menken are writing together.
As a diehard fan of The Little Mermaid, I viewed Disney’s decision to reboot this animated classic with skepticism. But the addition of the supremely talented creator of Hamilton and In the Heights to the production helps set my mind at ease.
