As a manner of tradition, John Williams confirmed this week that he will be returning for the eighth time to the Star Wars franchise to compose the score to Star Wars: Episode VIII, directed by Rian Johnson. It was expected he would return, but also a welcome relief to fans who have grown to love the movies and iconic themes from his music.

The news comes from masslive.com who was present for Williams’ performance with the Boston Pops Orchestra when he made the announcement. “Williams told the crowd he would begin work in a few weeks on the much-anticipated Star Wars: Episode VIII after seeing an early cut. ” Of course he was mum about Rey’s parentage, or perhaps the filmmakers haven’t divulged this yet.

“He said he accepted the invitation from Lucasfilm producer Kathleen Kennedy mainly because he was enchanted by actress Daisy Ridley’s portrayal of Rey and does not want another composer scoring her scenes.” Yea she has that affect on us too!

At a young 84 years old, John Williams is one of the most award-winning composers in our lifetime, also known for scoring other iconic franchises such as Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and countless others. Due to Williams’ schedule, he is sticking to scoring only the main episodes of Star Wars. Rogue One: A Star Wars story, due out at the end of 2016, will be scored by Alexandre Desplat.

Williams’ commitment to Star Wars and its fans recently came to light when he was delighted by two fans who performed the Star Wars theme outside of his home.
