Robert Rodriguez is on his way to putting together his cast for the James Cameron-produced Alita: Battle Angel. After news broke that Rosa Salazar was cast as the titular character, Variety is reporting that Christoph Waltz is in early negotiations to star as Doctor Dyson Ido, the cybersurgeon who finds the Alita and becomes her mentor.

Alita: Battle Angel is based on a manga written by Yukito Kishiro called “Battle Angel Alita” which was released in Japan as “Gunnm.” The film will follow Alita (Rosa Salazar), a 26th-century cyborg who’s rescued by Doctor Dyson Ido from a scrapyard and reassembled. Once revived, Alita only remembers her training in a deadly martial art, and becomes a hunter-warrior who tracks down vicious criminals.

Waltz is no stranger to fanboy genre films as the prolific actor has starred in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained along with The Green HornetSPECTRE, and The Legend of Tarzan.

James Cameron and Jon Landau will produce for Fox under their Lightstorm Entertainment banner.

Alita: Battle Angel is set to hunt theaters on July 20, 2018.
