Anton Yelchin’s parents to sue several companies over car accident

If you saw Start Trek Beyond and follow the news, a lingering feeling of sadness probably accompanied your viewing experience. Besides Leonard Nimoy passing away at the start of 2015, Beyond‘s own Anton Yelchin, who plays Checkov, passed away sadly just over a month ago at the young age of 27. In a freak accident, Yelchin lost his life when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards, pinning him against a brick pillar at his home in Studio City, California.

Because of this tragic event, it’s no surprise that Yelchin’s parents are planning to sue Fiat Chrysler, who makes the Cherokee, AutoNation, which is where the actor may have purchased the car, and manufacturer ZF North America, companies they believe are responsible for the “wrongful death” of their son. Their lawyer says the Yelchins want punitive damages “for the wrongful death of their son due to significant defects” in the Jeep.

Apparently, a class action suit was filed against Fiat Chrysler soon after Yelchin’s death claiming the 2015 Cherokee has a faulty e-shift which makes drivers believe their car is in park when it’s actually in neutral. Furthermore, the model of car involved in the accident was under a recall notice; although the initial recall had begun before Yelchin’s death, no affected vehicles had yet been repaired.

Yelchin, who died on June 19, 2016, is interred at Mount Sinai Park Cemetery in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles.
