Project Blue Book & Knightfall cancelled after two seasons at History

According to Deadline, History has officially decided not to give Robert Zemeckis’ historical sci-fi drama Project Blue Book and the Tom Cullen-led medieval drama Knightfall a third season renewal, leaving Vikings as the only ongoing scripted series in the network. The cancellation news comes after over a month since the Aidan Gillen-led series had aired its second season finale.

Project Blue Book was based on the real-life, top-secret investigations of the United States Air Force regarding Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and other phenomena during the 1950s and 1960s. It was inspired by the personal experiences of astrophysicist and ufologist Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a brilliant college professor, is recruited by the U.S. Air Force to spearhead a clandestine operation called Project Blue Book.

The series starred Game of Thrones alum Aidan Gillen ad Michael Malarkey (The Vampire Diaries). It was created by David O’Leary who also served as co-writer with the series’ showrunner Sean Jablonski. It was executive produced by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) Jacke Rapke, and Jack Levine of Compari Entertainment along with O’Leary, Jablonski, Barry Jossen and HISTORY’s Arturo Interian.

From A+E Studios in association with Jeremy Renner’s The Combine and Midnight Radio, Knightfall provided viewers an inside look at the medieval politics and warfare of the Knights Templar, the most powerful, wealthy and mysterious military order of the Middle Ages who were entrusted with protecting Christianity’s most precious relics. The second season also featured Star Wars alum Mark Hamill as Talus.

The main cast of the drama series starred Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey, Gunpowder) as Landry,  Pádraic Delaney (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, The Tudors) as Gawain, Simon Merrells (Spartacus, Dominion) as Tancrede, Jim Carter (Downton Abbey) as Pope Boniface VIII, Olivia Ross (War and Peace) as Queen Joan of Navarre, Ed Stoppard (The Crown) as King Philip IV of France, Julian Ovenden (Downton Abbey) as William De Nogaret, and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (The Bridge, The Absent One) as Adelina.
