Don Mancini reveals more details about Child’s Play TV series

Speaking at the 2018 Screamfest, writer Don Mancini along with producer David Kirschner offered more details about the forthcoming Child’s Play TV series which is still currently in development. Mancini confirmed that the series will be set right after the events of the 2017 film Cult of Chucky.

“We deliberately ended Cult with a bunch of cliffhangers to set up a TV series,” Mancini said (via Bloody Disgusting). “Because there are so many different threads now, television could best accommodate that so that was done intentionally. At the same time, we have a whole new world, a bunch of new characters which we can say nothing about.”

Mancini also said that the new series “involves children,” with Kirschner confirming they’d go back to the roots of the series:

“The only thing I think we can say is from the original film that Don wrote, Child’s Play, we are playing with that concept again, the idea of child’s play,” Kirschner said. “I’ll let you guys fill in the pieces of that.”

“We saw that after seven movies, how can we flip again?” Mancini added “So this time not by merely changing genre but by changing medium. This will give us a different kind of canvas, a much bigger canvas to explore characters and relationships.”

It was previously reported in February that a series was in early development from Mancini and producer David Kirschner in addition to future films, and this new announcement seals the deal on the red-headed psychopath bringing his mayhem to television. Mancini’s previous discussion said the film’s story arc will continue with the series, marking a unique connection between a film and TV series.

The Child’s Play series has been running for 30 years, with the first film dropping in 1988 to box office success, generally positive reviews and a cult following, spawning six sequels that remained box office successes but slowly started earning more mixed and negative reviews, until the revitalized Curse of Chucky, which returned to the franchise’s horror roots and earned very positive reviews. The most recent installment, Cult of Chucky, was released on Blu-ray and video on demand last October and received strong reviews from critics. Brad Dourif has been a staple of the franchise since its inception, lending his voice to the murderous doll in all of the films.
