Jumanji recaptures first place and Winchester opens in third

After being knocked out of the top spot last weekend, Sony Pictures‘ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle returned to first place with an estimated $11 million, to take its domestic total to $352.6 million. It’s the first December wide release to be number one at the box office in February since 1998 (Titanic, February 6, 1998). With another $12.6 million this weekend internationally, the film surpassed the $500 million mark overseas. The international total now stands at $503.1 million and the global total at $855.7 million. Directed by Jake Kasdan, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale. It was made for $90 million.

20th Century Fox sequel Maze Runner: The Death Cure dropped to second place and 57.8% in ticket sales its second weekend. The film added $10.2 million and is now at $39.8 million after two weeks. Made for $62 million, The Death Cure was again directed by Wes Ball and stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Ki Hong Lee, Barry Pepper, Will Poulter, and Patricia Clarkson.

CBS Films and Lionsgate’s Winchester, starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke, debuted in the third spot with an estimated $9.3 million from 2,480 theaters, an average of $3,730 per theater. The film received a B- CinemaScore from audiences. Winchester was directed by The Spierig Brothers (Jigsaw, Predestination).

Remaining in fourth place with just an 18.3% drop in sales, The Greatest Showman (20th Century Fox) earned yet another $7.8 million its seventh weekend for a total of $137.5 million. Directed by Michael Gracey, The Greatest Showman cost $84 million to make and stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya.

The Scott Cooper-directed Hostiles (Entertainment Studios) grossed $5.5 million in fifth place to bring its total to $21.2 million so far. The film stars Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Jesse Plemons, Ben Foster, and Adam Beach.

Steven Spielberg’s The Post (20th Century Fox), starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, earned $5.2 million this weekend and has grossed $67.2 million after seven weeks. The film cost $50 million to make.
