I’ve always struggled with headphones. Whether over-ear, in-ear, on-ear, studio monitors, molded, any of them. It’s not that they’re difficult to comprehend; it’s that the market is so flooded with them! I’m a purist in that I feel headphones shouldn’t be at the forefront of anyone’s mind when they’re wanting to listen to any audio; it should just be a plug and play situation, without having to worry about losing fidelity or quality.
So when we were approached by a company based in Sweden that offered to send us a pair of Bluetooth headphones, I winced a little. Bluetooth headphones don’t usually excite me, mostly due to their inability to maintain a quality stream, causing the audio to be lossy. Once I looked at the headphones they were planning to send, however, I decided to give them a try, and see what Sudio has to offer with the Regent On-Ear Headphones.
Design
Aesthetically, the Regent headsets carry an on-ear style, similar to most bluetooth models on the market. With a minimalist design, Sudio’s Regent states that it provides “world class sound quality and definition. With an impeccable balance of instrumental tones and noise clarity, the musical elements seamlessly knit together to create an unmatched listening experience.” Capitalizing on current trends, the headphones boast a matte black padded headband, attached to thin metal wired adjusters that connect to the monitors. The design folds nicely into a compact size, making it easy for you to carry with you on the go.
I completely dig the design of the model, as the size and minimal approach to the overall look of the headset make it easy for travel. Although it may not look like much, these headsets are really sturdy and durable for the daily wear and tear. I do have some concerns, however, as not every aspect of the design sits well with me. For starters, the buttons on each of the monitors are small, making it difficult to locate without having to actually see them. In times where it’s dark, finding how to turn on the headsets are going to be difficult, until I become accustomed to where they’re located.

Much like the design choice, the Regent doesn’t offer many unique aspects of their functionality. It does, however, state that with what it does offer, they offer excellence. These headsets utilize Bluetooth version 4.1, which coordinates its radio with 4G automatically so there is no overlap and both can perform at their maximum potential. This version also offers improved data transfer, as well as smarter connectivity. All this, with a range of at least 10 meters, result in a strong performance in terms of bluetooth connectivity.
Another aspect of functionality is the battery life. The Regent offers over 24 hours of active listening time, with a 20 day standby time. Now, I’ve never been one to have headphones on my head all day long, but I’ve come close in testing these bad boys out. These headsets went the distance, and made it through over 18 hours of audio books and podcasts, giving me the excuse to veg out in my room for an entire Saturday. Thank you, Sudio.

One of the most unique things about headphones that people tend to misinterpret is how they’re supposed to sound. Many people are caught in the wave of hype when it comes to big bassy headsets, thinking that this is how you’re supposed to be hearing the music you’re listening to. The thing is, without understanding how to equalize your sound, how do you know that a lot of bass is the best way to hear that song?
Sudio offers an experience that allows you to have a crisp and clear sound, without muddying the quality by creating a false low-end bump. The clarity these headsets offer really shine when listening to some albums from my turntable, where the fidelity of the audio is far superior than most other bluetooth headsets.
Conclusion
I’ve had a ton of bluetooth headphones over the last few years, but these guys really know how to design a pair of headphones! I have to give Sudio credit: when it comes to style and quality, they have it on lock! There are a few small minor issues with the Regent, but nothing that a little bit of time and effort won’t help you get over. As a bonus, Sudio also sent an extra set of ear caps for the headsets. The caps are interchangeable, so if you want to look even more stylish, then go ahead and check out the whole selection available on their site. For the price of $99, these are a good smart buy for any audiophile that prides themselves in hearing great audio from bluetooth headsets.
