There are many games that came out on portable systems that I wished came out on consoles as well. The Resident Evil franchise has seen great success, so branching onto the DS and 3DS was expected. When Resident Evil: Revelations hit the 3DS, it was met with good reviews and sales. With an HD remake for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and the eventual sequel, it finally hits the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Placed between the events of RE4 and RE5, Resident Evil: Revelations stars the original duo, Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. Along with two other members, you work together as you slowly uncover a bigger mystery behind the new virus.
Taking place on an abandoned ship, you start as Jill Valentine as you search for Chris Redfield. During a mission, his transmission was lost and was last known on the ship. As you make your way through the dark corridors and empty rooms, you encounter BOWs, or Bio-Organic Weapons. While searching for Chris, you fall into a trap and encounter a terrorist group. Without weapons, you fight your way through the ship and past the BOWs to contact your commander, BSAA head O’Brian. O’Brian, however, comes in contact with Chris Redfield still on his original mission in the mountains. Being sent to investigate, the two groups slowly uncover a bigger conspiracy involving O’Brian, the virus, and their own team.
Since Resident Evil: Revelations is a remake of a 3DS game, the obvious changes are the control scheme. The console controller allows for more control though most buttons are not used. The game handles like most 3rd-person shooters, so it’ll be familiar to veteran players. Since this was Capcom’s attempt at going back to its horror roots, it doesn’t disappoint. The ambiance that surrounds the scenery creates the feel of being alone while something lurks in the darkness. The little growls that grow bigger as you move on eventually lead to a lurking BOW ready to devour you. This isn’t a typical shooter as ammo is scarce. Like previous Resident Evil games, utilizing your resources will ensure your survival.
The Raid mode is back from the 3DS version and allows you to play with someone else or face it alone. Set in the game levels, weapons are placed around and you fight your way through waves of enemies until you reach a boss. You can unlock new skins and weapons and enjoy mayhem with a teammate. Weapons and ammo are scarce so working together is a must to succeed.
Final Reaction
Whether you enjoy a good action game or the survival horror atmosphere, Resident Evil: Revelations has you covered. By taking the two original characters from the first game, you relive what made the genre scary to begin with. The story is full of plot twists and action you’ll get hooked trying to discover the truth. In the end, Capcom delivers with another Resident Evil game that’ll have you playing with the lights on, again.
