Will Ron Howard save the untitled Han Solo movie?

Han Solo
Lucasfilm has officially announced that Ron Howard will be taking over directorial duties for the untitled Han Solo film. Originally, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were hired on as directors with some months into principal photography. However, that didn’t pan out and Miller and Lord split from the film project due to “creative differences.” According to Variety’s sources, the directors were fired because they were clashing with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy, Lawrence Kasdan, and the Lucasfilm team.

“It was a culture clash from day one,” the source said. “She didn’t even like the way they folded their socks.”

“Kathy, her team and Larry Kasdan have been doing it their way for a very long time. They know how the cheese is made and that’s how they want it made,” said the source. “It became a very polarizing set.”

Kennedy initially brought on Miller and Lord for their style of comedy and vision. The directors have had critical and box office successes like The LEGO Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street. In the end, their filming ethic didn’t mesh well with Kennedy and Lucasfilm. She made a bold move in hiring them, however, their visions didn’t align. Was there a way to prevent this from happening? Were they not on the same page during pre-production?

You have to admire Kennedy for hiring directors with bold visions. Rian Johnson was brought on board for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. And he has directed Looper and Brick, films considered to be clever and thrilling.

However, there are those who aren’t fans of The Force Awakens and Rogue One due to them banking on nostalgia. The Force Awakens had a similar structure to A New Hope. Rogue One revisited the past to tell the story of a group stealing the Death Star plans. And of course, the untitled Han Solo film will follow a young Han Solo.

And that brings us back to Ron Howard. Here’s Kennedy’s statement on the replacement director.

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kennedy. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

Howard has directed lots of critically acclaimed films including Apollo 13, Rush, Cinderella Man and A Beautiful Mind and hits like The Da Vinci Code. With Howard, it would seem like a safer bet for Lucasfilm since his movies are more on the dramatical side and less on slapstick comedy.

The untitled Han Solo film hits theaters on May 25, 2018.
