Universal is working on live-action Voltron movie

voltron

Voltron made a comeback when Netflix and DreamWorks released a new animated series called Voltron: Legendary Defender. Now Universal Pictures is adapting a live-action film based on the property with David Hayter (Watchmen, voice of Metal Gear Solid‘s Solid Snake) attached as the screenwriter, according to Deadline. The film will be produced by Tom Engelman (The Chronicles of Riddick, The Lone Ranger).

Voltron was a popular ’80s cartoon show that was based on the Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV Japanese anime. It followed five young pilots who have the power to control big Lion robots. When the five robots combine, it forms Voltron.

There have been many versions of the classic series since then, with a Voltron: Fleet of Doom TV special in 1986, Voltron: The Third Dimension animated series in 1998, and Nickelodeon’s Voltron Force in 2011. The last two only had 26 episodes each. The Netflix and DreamWorks’ Voltron: Legendary Defender is premiering the second season on January 20, 2017.

There was an attempt at a live-action Voltron movie back in 2005 with Justin Marks (The Jungle Book) attached as the screenwriter and Mark Gordon as the producer. As you can tell, it didn’t work out.
