Underground Nation Magazine: Describe the life of an independent producer for Psychopathic Records and the ongoing battle of sifting through an over-saturated market to produce for other artists among the underground?
Str8jaket: Well first I wake up and paint my face, as that was the first requirement of my job. Why I am always forced to paint it like Violent J I still do not understand, but maybe it has something to do with J’s ongoing crush on me but who knows. After that I usually start work at 10 am and it basically starts with myself and ICP going over a short briefing of the plans for that day whether we are working on a new song or finishing a previous song from the day before and then we get shit done! I am so busy with Psychopathic that there isn’t much time for me to sift through and produce or engineer other underground artists with the exception of some projects I’ve done over the last year such as Ouija Macc’s “Resistance 2” Mixtape and his upcoming “Wasteland” project and Big Hoodoo’s recent Album “The Red Book”. UGN: Can you explain in great detail how you go about brainstorming an idea behind the concept of a production for an artist on Psychopathic Records and how precisely you turn your sounds into a production masterpiece?
Str8jaket: When you work with guys like Insane Clown Posse and other artists of that caliber they already have an idea of what they are looking for so basically I take that idea and use it to mold the feel of the beat and add my own melodies and FX I feel are fitting to that particular production. Or sometimes we just go through pre-made beats I have done and make a few changes together to make it fit. Its different with each individual track so the process is never really the same.
