Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
In the previous episode of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Ruby went home with William, and Montrose killed Yahima. In Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 5, William introduced Ruby to magic for a favor, and Tic worked to decipher Titus’ pages.
Metamorphosis
Ruby woke up by herself as the white woman guarding the tower in Ardham. She wandered the streets, and the police picked her up and returned her to William. He showed her the potion he’d given her after she painfully and gruesomely shed the white woman’s skin. He left it for her with a large wad of money. Ruby only needed the potion to enjoy the day. She used the potion to get an assistant manager job at the Carson’s department store, going by the name Hillary Davenport.
The other white women working at the department store wanted Tamara, the only black employee, to take them to the South Side. Ruby witnessed the manager, Mr. Hughes, sexually assault Tamara in the alley. With Christina’s encouragement, Ruby used the potion to seek revenge on Hughes. She let the white woman skin fall off her as she violated him with the heel of her shoe.
Inconsequential Favor
In exchange for the potions, William wanted Ruby to do a favor for Christina. Ruby had to attend a party at the Chicago Lodge as a server to plant a rock talisman in the police commissioner’s office there. Christina told Ruby that the commissioner’s seat was rightfully William’s. While planting the talisman, Ruby found a mutilated man in the closet. She hid in there with him when the commissioner and other Lodge members arrived.
After the incident with Mr. Hughes, William arrived home, and Ruby demanded to know what was in the basement. He shed his skin, revealing that he was Christina all along.
Protection
When Tic discovered what Montrose had done to Yahima and Titus’ pages, he beat him. Leti had taken photographs of the pages, and Tic worked to decipher them. He used his ring to try to decode them.
Tic explained to Leti that Montrose had killed Yahima instead of letting her go like she’d believed. Leti believe the magic to be evil, but Tic felt it depended on how they use it. Tic wanted to use magic to protect their kind, but Leti pointed out that Montrose had killed Yahima to protect him.
After deciphering a page, Tic frantically called Ji-Ah. He asked how she knew, and she hung up.
Queens
After Tic beat him, Montrose slept with Sammy. Sammy got ready for a drag night with other black drag queens. Montrose attended the show and danced with Sammy.
