After months of rumors swirling about a possible third film in the sci-fi franchise starring the Suicide Squad alum, Deadline has brought word that Disney has begun developing a new Tron film with Garth Davis (Lion) set to direct Jared Leto.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps for the third project and sources report that while the studio is looking to actively get the film off the ground but haven’t given it a greenlight just yet while they determine what story route to take.

The 1982 original film centered on Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer who finds himself transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with its programs in an effort to escape with the help of the titular security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. Nearly 30 years after the film became a cult classic on home media, Disney brought the virtual world back to life with the Joseph Kosinski-helmed sequel Tron: Legacy starring Garrett Hedlund as Flynn’s adult son Sam as he finds himself transported into the virtual reality of The Grid while looking for his long-lost father and teams up with algorithm Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and his father to stop the malevolent program Clu (Briges) from invading the real world.

Released in 2010, Legacy was a box office hit, grossing over $400 million at the global box office on its $170 million, but given the film’s mixed reviews and the following financial disappointment of the George Clooney-starring Tomorrowland, Disney put a hold on the threequel. With the sequel garnering a major cult following, Kosinski reassured multiple times over the years that a Legacy follow-up hadn’t been scrapped by the studio, with rumors swirling in early 2017 that Leto was being eyed for a new character in the new film, though word began to dim in the following months.

Davis is best known for his work in the indie scene, having made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed biographical drama Lion starring Dev Patel and Rooney Mara, which was nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture, and followed it up with the biblical drama Mary Magdalene starring Mara and Joaquin Phoenix, which received a polarized response.
