Following a competitive bidding war against nine other studios, Deadline brings word that Oscar-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and Searchlight Television have successfully acquired the television rights to a recent New York Magazine article titled Boss of The Beach, which was written by David Gauvey Herbert. Published on June 23, Boss of The Beach centers around the tumultuous career of Peter Stein, the chief lifeguard who has run the New York City lifeguard cops for the last 40 years. The article also explores the hopes, dreams and scandals including corruption, cocaine parties, and more which had happened in the NYC lifeguard corps during Stein’s reign.

The project is already in active series development with Searchlight TV already looking for potential writers that could pen the TV adaptation. Searchlight’s Head of Development and Production, Gina Kwon and VP of TV Development Danny Samit have also signed on to oversee the project in behalf of the studio.

Should the project push through, this would be Aronofsky’s first venture into television as he is best known for his acclaimed works in films such as Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, The Fighter, and Black Swan. The latter earned five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Director for Aronofsky, with Natalie Portman winning her first Oscar for Best Actress.
