After seeing his last series falter at Amazon Studios, nine-time Emmy winner Matthew Weiner (Mad Men) is reportedly heading to FX to develop a new half-hour mystery dramedy series, according to Variety.

Though the plot details are currently being kept under wraps, sources report that Weiner is writing the scripts for the series and will also take on the roles of executive producer and director for the pilot, with FX Productions attached to produce.

If the network gives the project a full series order, it would mark the 54-year-old screenwriter’s first time coming back to the world of cable television in five years following the conclusion of his acclaimed period drama Mad Men on AMC, which garnered 116 Emmy nominations and 16 wins in its eight-year run. Weiner also served as director, executive producer and showrunner on the Jon Hamm-starring series, though with FX having recently inked a deal with streaming service Hulu for multiplatform programming, he could continue in the streaming world.

Weiner’s most recent credits include a guest appearance on Fox’s long-running animated sitcom The Simpsons, directing an episode of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and creating, executive producing and directing the ensemble anthology drama The Romanoffs at Amazon. After its first season received generally mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, Amazon announced it had no plans to order a second season.
