Michael Mann Working on a Heat Prequel Film

Woa! Here’s some exciting news. Way back in 2017, we reported that acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann was working on a prequel novel to his 1995 crime-drama masterpiece Heat. Well, now, according to a recent interview with Deadline, Mann has also decided to turn said novel into a screenplay.

“It’s a stack about 10 inches high on my desk right now,” Mann told Deadline. “We’re on it, and I’m putting time into that and a screenplay I can’t tell you about. But I absolutely want to make a movie of the Heat prequel.”

Um. Yes, please.

Apparently, the trade also reported that Mann was working on a sequel to Heat as well, but that portion has since been edited out of the article.

For those unaware, here is the film’s official synopsis rom Warner Bros.: A brilliant L.A. cop (Al Pacino) follows the trail from a deadly armed robbery and becomes fixated on a deadly but equally brilliant master thief (Robert DeNiro) and his crew (Val Kilmer and Jon Voight) who are taking Los Angeles to the cleaners, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman also co-star.

Heat not only features an amazing cast of incredible characters, but it also features perhaps the greatest shoot-out in motion-picture history; and also carries the distinction of being the first film to put Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro — who were both featured in The Godfather Part II — on screen at the same time in the famous diner scene.

Mann is currently working on the HBO Max TV series Tokyo Vice, starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe.
