For the week of May 18, DC Universe’s Stargirl kicked off Courtney Whitmore’s origin story as the legacy of the JSA while forming a new bond with stepdad/sidekick S.T.R.I.P.E. aka Pat Dugan. DC Universe

Stargirl, Series Premiere: The DC series follows the story of Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) who is a smart, athletic, and above all else kind girl. This high school teenager’s seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father, Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero. “Borrowing” the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes. The first episode is streaming now on DC Universe as well as The CW app.

Homecoming, Season 2 Premiere: In Season 2, Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures) will now be leading the second season as she portrays the role of an army vet named Jackie, who is described as a tenacious woman who finds herself floating in a canoe, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is. Her character wakes in a rowboat adrift a lake, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is. Her ensuing search for identity will lead her into the heart of the Geist Group, the unconventional wellness company behind the Homecoming Initiative. The new season will begin streaming on Friday, May 22.

The 100, Season 7 Premiere: In the first episode of the final season, Clarke (Eliza Taylor) and her friends attempt to rebuild Sanctum as a new threat rises in the woods. Bob Morley, Marie Avgeropuolos, Lindsey Morgan, Richard Harmon, Tasya Teles, Shannon Kook, JR Bourne, Shelby Flannery, and Chuku Modu also star. Ed Fraiman directed the episode written by Jason Rothenberg, premiering on Wednesday, May 20, and available to stream on The CW app tomorrow.

Netflix

Blood & Water, Series Premiere: After crossing paths at a party, a Cape Town teen sets out to prove whether a private-school swimming star is her sister who was abducted at birth. The new drama series stars Ama Qamata, Khosi Ngema, and Gail Mabalane and was written and directed by Nosipho Dumisa, Daryne Joshua, and Travis Taute. The series will drop on Wednesday, May 20.

Acorn TV

Dead Still, Exclusive U.S./Canada Series Premiere: The comedy-drama series follows the strange adventures of renowned 1880s Dublin memorial photographer Brock Blennerhasset (British Independent Film Award winner Michael Smiley) and his loyal assistant Conall Molloy (Kerr Logan), as they visit grieving families for photo assignments, while a tenacious detective investigates a series of local murders and eyes possible disturbing connections between them and Brock. The first two episodes are now streaming on Acorn TV.

Sundance Now

Penance, Exclusive North American Series Premiere: Sundance Now’s new psychological thriller is a three-part British miniseries starring Julie Graham (Queens of Mystery), Nico Mirallegro (Upstairs Downstairs), Neil Morrissey (Line of Duty), and Tallulah Greieve (Cinderella). Rosalie Douglas has lost her son. Her marriage is falling apart. Her teenage daughter, Maddie, has gone off the rails, wracked with grief and as-yet-unexplained guilt over her brother’s death. Rosalie lives in a fog of grief and denial; she refuses to accept that Rob’s death was an accident. The lives of the Douglas family are changed forever when they meet Jed, a beautiful, charismatic young man at bereavement counselling. A spark of hope for the future is rekindled within the household. But underneath, a deadly and morally corrupt triangle is taking shape… The miniseries will premiere all three episodes on Thursday, May 21.

Renewals

The Good Fight, Season 5: CBS All Access has renewed The Good Fight for a fifth season, while also announcing that due to production being shut down, the current fourth season is being cut short to seven episodes. The first three seasons are available to stream now.

Good Girls, Season 4: NBC has picked up creator Jenna Bans’ comedy crime drama series Good Girls for a fourth season. The third season is available to stream on NBC.com, while the first two seasons are available to stream on Netflix.

Breeders, Season 2: FX has renewed the comedy Breeders, starring Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard that explores the struggles of parenting. The first season is available to stream now on FX on Hulu.

Freeform: After scoring strong reviews and solid ratings for the cable network, Freeform has greenlit second seasons for its freshman series, comedy Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, and the supernatural drama Motherland: Fort Salem. Both series are available to stream on Freeform’s platforms.

FOX: The network has chosen to renew hit medical drama The Resident and the Tim Allen-starring sitcom Last Man Standing for respective fourth and ninth seasons.

Gentefied, Season 2: Netflix has renewed its Latinx dramedy Gentefied for a second season, ordering eight more episodes of the show that’s based on a digital series of the same title. The first season, executive produced by America Ferrera, is available to stream now.
