David Ayer Shares Thoughts On HBO Max Release of Suicide Squad Director’s Cut

After last week’s announcement of HBO Max debuting Zack Snyder’s infamous cut of Justice League, rumors have begun swirling regarding David Ayer debuting his cut of Suicide Squad in a similar fashion and though he confirmed there would be some legal hurdles to overcome in bringing it to audiences, he has continued to share his thoughts on Twitter as to how it could happen.

After Collider’s Steve Weintraub posed the possibility of HBO Max debuting Ayer’s original cut given the continued popularity of the superhero genre and that it wouldn’t need nearly as much work as Snyder’s Justice League, the 52-year-old writer/director confirmed it wouldn’t take the $20-30 million to finish and considers being given the chance to finish it “incredibly cathartic.”

The ball is firmly in Warner Bros. court on this one. It certainly bodes well that Ayer doesn’t seem to harbor any ill will toward the studio. Ayer has also said that there’s a lot more footage of Jared Leto’s Joker nestled somewhere in the WB archives. Regardless, there’s the matter of what kind of resources the studio is willing to give Ayer to realize his true vision of the film. Warner Bros. is reportedly giving Snyder an estimated $20-30 million to properly finish his Justice League cut.
