B.J. Novak’s untitled anthology drama gets series order at FX

After more than a year since B.J. Novak’s new anthology series had been granted a pilot order from FX, Variety brings word that the network has officially given a series order to the untitled half-hour drama from The Office alum. This announcement comes after the series had finished filming the first two episodes.

“Thrilled, excited, humbled — these are the words in every press release, and I can’t believe how much I actually mean them,” Novak said in statement. “This is my dream show, and FX is the dream place to make it. When I brought it to FX, I wondered if it went too far, and they told me, you can go further. I can’t wait to get started.”

“We have been admirers of B.J. Novak for a long time,” President of original programming at FX Entertainment, Nick Grad said. “We loved his creative twist on the anthology format, and he delivered on two phenomenal episodes. We are looking forward to going into production on the rest of the season and supporting BJ’s ambitious vision for this project.”

The untitled anthology series will be using the boldest issues of our time as a jumping-off point to tell singular, character-driven stories about the world we live in today. Each episode will feature a different cast with a drastically different tone. The anthology series is executive produced by B.J. Novak, who had also written and directed the first two episodes. It is a production by FX Productions.

The first episode will be led by Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea, Ben Is Back) and Golden Globe nominee Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, Unbelievable). It will also be including O’Shea Jackson Jr., George Wallace, Ed Asner, Brendan Francis Scannell and more. While the second episode will star Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Punisher), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Amy Landecker (Transparent) and Emmy winner Beau Bridges.

Novak starred as temp-turned-executive-turned-temp Ryan Howard on the first eight seasons of The Office, as well as serving as a writer, director and producer on the show. He left in the final season along with Mindy Kaling to focus on her now-canceled series, The Mindy Project, though he did make a couple of cameo appearances in season 9.
