Cary Fukunaga Wanted No Time to Die to Take Place in Bond’s Head

Cary Fukunaga Originally Wanted No Time to Die to Take Place Inside Bond’s Head

Hollywood is packed to the brim with tales of weird films that were never made, or alternate versions of films that were. Case in point: Cary Fukunaga’s original version of No Time to Die, which the director pitched to the studio as a film that took place inside James Bond’s head.

“Miranda, I swear to god,” Fukunaga told Interview Magazine, “I had an idea that this movie could all be taking place inside the villain’s lair from the last film. There’s this scene where a needle goes into James Bond’s head, which is supposed to make him forget everything, and then he miraculously escapes by a watch bomb. And then he and Léa blow up the place, and go on to save the day. I was like, “What if everything up until the end of act two is all inside his head?”

In some ways I can see how that makes sense. That bizarre needle bit in Spectre did just sort of go away. Who’s to say those tiny needles didn’t have a lasting impact on 007?

Fukunaga also discussed his personal relationship with the Bond franchise, stating that he, like so many moviegoers, hadn’t given the series a second thought until Casino Royale. “Prior to that,” he says,” my only in-depth James Bond experience was at my cousin’s house playing Golden Eye.”
