Jason Blum would love to make a Frankenstein movie

After the critical and commercial success of Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ Invisible Man, it looks like Blumhouse horror producer Jason Blum is setting his sights on another Universal Monster project. During a recent interview at The Evolution of Horror podcast (via Comic Book), when asked if Blumhouse already has plans to continue rebooting other monster projects he revealed that they aren’t currently developing any but he would love to remake the 1931 horror classic Frankenstein. The iconic monster was created in the classic gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus which was written by author Mary Shelley.

“I’d love to do Frankenstein.” Blum said. “I’ve tasked our filmmakers with trying to figure out just straight Frankenstein. Again, I don’t know if someone else is doing it, I don’t know anything about it, but I would love to try and I’m waiting for the great idea. The Invisible Man, I agree, the best ideas feel like, ‘My gosh, it’s so obvious, why didn’t that happen before?’ If we could come up with something as good for Frankenstein, I’d love to try that.”

The Invisible Man centers on Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss), a woman trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist. She escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid). But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turn lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

The film had its theatrical release last week where it garnered positive reviews from critics and had grossed $27 million during its opening weekend on a budget of $7 million. The film is now certified fresh at Rotten Tomatoes with a 91% rating.

If Blumhouse Production will be able to produce a Frankenstein movie, it would be added to the growing list of Universal’s upcoming monster projects which includes: Paul Feig’s Dark Army; Dexter Fletcher’s film about Dracula henchman RenfieldElizabeth Banks’ Invisible Woman, and Matt Stawki’s Monster Mash. It was also recently reported that Oscar-nominated producer Amy Pascal is interested in resurrecting the studio’s long-in development The Bride of Frankenstein reboot.
