Rachel McAdams Won’t Return For Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Earlier today, word broke that Marvel is in talks with Sam Raimi to bring him on board to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But Variety‘s report also buried another major piece of news that’s been largely ignored. According to Variety, Rachel McAdams will not be returning for the Doctor Strange sequel.

In the first film, McAdams portrayed Dr. Christine Palmer, a colleague and former lover of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange. Christine attempted to help Strange emotionally move past his injuries before their relationship fell apart. Strange also revisited Christine after he became a sorcerer, and they reconciled before they parted ways again. She was perhaps Strange’s last link to the world he left behind.

Fortunately, Variety also noted that both Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Wong are expected to return. Ejiofor played Strange’s friend turned adversary, Baron Mordo; while Wong portrayed Wong, another sorcerer serving under the Ancient One. Elizabeth Olsen will also reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Disney+’s WandaVision and Loki series will also tie into the upcoming sequel.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
