Peninsula: Well Go USA acquires U.S. rights to Train to Busan sequel

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Well Go USA has successfully acquired the North American theatrical distribution rights to director Yeon Sang-Ho’s highly-anticipated South Korean zombie thriller sequel Peninsula, a follow-up to 2016’s hit Train to Busan. Set to debut in South Korea this coming summer, the film’s distribution rights was also sold by Contents Panda to other 14 countries including the U.K. (Studiocanal), Australia (Purple Rain), and France (ARP SAS).

“Train to Busan is timeless,” Well Go said in statement. “Four years after its North American release, it’s still one of our top performing titles. Our fans can’t get enough of it, so when we heard about Peninsula, we knew that not only was this a title that belongs under the Well Go brand, but also a story we wanted to continue to tell.”

Not much is currently known about the film’s cast or if Park Joo-suk is returning to script the follow-up entitled Peninsula, but it is reportedly set four years after the ending of the first film and is being described as “a thought-provoking post-apocalyptic film about people fighting to escape the land ruined by disaster.”

The distribution company has reportedly set a release date in its home country for an August 12, 2020 release date, while no plans have currently been set for its international release.

Train to Busan was directed by Sang-ho and followed the story of a workaholic businessman and father who accompanies his doe-eyed daughter on the titular train ride to see her mother at the very same time that a malevolent virus breaks out, turning the populace into ravenous, milk-eyed ghouls. When one of those blood-sucking zombies gets on the train, Hell is unleashed and the father must team up with a gaggle of survivors to fight the dead and protect his child.
