What’s the Most Anticipated Film of 2020?

Top Ten

1) Dune (18%, 414 votes)
2) Wonder Woman 1984 (13%, 297 votes)
3) Tenet (12%, 292 votes)
4) Ghostbusters: Afterlife (9%, 206 votes)
5) Eternals (6%, 149 votes)
6) No Time to Die (6%, 148 votes)
7) Top Gun: Maverick (6%, 145 votes)
8) Godzilla vs. Kong (5%, 125 votes)
9) Black Widow (4%, 102 votes)
10) Halloween Kills (2%, 58 votes)

Based on our readers votes, it would seem that Warner Bros.’ upcoming remake/adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic Dune will be the big ticket this year, especially with no competition from a Star Wars or Avatar film. The appeal can only be attributed to the popularity of the book, the cult following of David Lynch’s 1984 film, the various TV adaptations, as well as the all-star cast and the promising direction of Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival).

Wonder Woman 1984, Eternals and Black Widow are all huge female-led superhero tentpole films, while Ghostbusters, Top Gun and Halloween all hail from 30+ year-old franchises with devoted followings. The latest Bond and Godzilla/Kong movies represent even older franchises, with 007 in its 58th year while Godzilla in its 66th and Kong entering his 87th year on the silver screen. Tenet is the main outlier as the only wholly original movie in the Top Ten, and that can likely be attributed to the enduring fanbase for director Christopher Nolan, this generation’s Hitchcock or Spielberg-level helmer.

Here are the rest of the films from our poll…

The comic book genre is seeing a new milestone as four of the more major adaptations are being helmed by women including Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984, Cate Shortland’s Black Widow and Chloé Zhao’s The Eternals. The genre may also finally see the long-awaited debut of Josh Boone’s The New Mutants alongside the next two installments in Sony’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, Venom 2 and Morbius.

The year will also see numerous live-action adaptations of both video games and a Disney classic with Mulan, Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog, which is seeing renewed interest from fans after the latest trailer highlighting the character’s drastic re-design, and Sony Pictures’ Uncharted, which confirmed Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home) to star earlier this year as a younger Nathan Drake, Mark Wahlberg (Instant Family) as his partner Sully and Travis Knight (Bumblebee) set to direct.

After demolishing the box office this year, Disney will look to keep its streak going outside of the MCU and live-action remakes with a rare two Pixar films in the same year, Onward and Soul, as well as a film adaptation of the classic theme park ride Jungle Cruise. Their family-friendly fare will have to compete with Warner Bros’ Scoob!, a CGI reboot of the iconic Scooby-Doo franchise, the Robert Downey Jr.-led Dolittle and Paramount Pictures’ The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.

In addition to comic book outings, the action genre will see the long-awaited returns of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for Bad Boys for Life and Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick, as well as the highly-anticipated final Daniel Craig James Bond portrayal No Time to Die, the espionage prequel King’s Man, the video-game set Ryan Reynolds-starring Free Guy, the monster blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong, Christopher Nolan’s mysterious Tenet, Universal Pictures’ Fast & Furious 9, Jason Reitman’s shot at reviving the iconic franchise Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation.

The horror genre is looking to find another spark after a successful 2019 with A Quiet Place: Part II, Sony’s reboot of The Grudge, the highly-anticipated Invisible Man remake from Leigh Whannell (Upgrade), the Candyman remake starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen), the third installment in the primary Conjuring series and the next installment in the rebooted Halloween franchise. Even the musical genre is set to make a comeback of sorts this year with the release of the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights and Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story.
