While moderating a panel with the cast of the upcoming horror Underwater following a press screening of the movie, filmmaker Andy Muschietti (IT, IT Chapter Two, Mama) confirmed that he will be collaborating with Netflix on an adaptation of The Howling (via That Hashtag Show).

Last year during WB’s ScareDiego event at San Diego Comic-Con, the director revealed that if he had the chance to remake another horror film it would be the 1981 horror classic The Howling. The original film was directed by Joe Dante and follows a television newswoman who was sent to a remote resort after a terrible near-death experience with a serial killer. However, things get worse as she discovers that the residents turn out to be werewolves.

The book that inspired the 1981 movie that Muschietti will be adapting was written in 1977 by Gary Brandner. In the novel, the main character, Karyn Beatty, suffers a traumatic attack and a nervous breakdown. To recover, she heads to a little town in the mountains, only to discover the inhabitants aren’t what they appear to be. The movie differed quite a bit from the book, and while no details have yet been confirmed about the direction Muschietti will be taking with the newly announced project, it is likely the filmmaker will stick more closely to the original source material.

The news follows Muschietti’s announcement during the same Q&A panel that he will officially start production on The Flash later this year and that it will indeed adapt Flashpoint, though it will be a “different version of Flashpoint than you’re expecting.” The Flash is expected to arrive in theaters on July 1, 2022.
