Disney released a new trailer for Mulan on Wednesday, and it’s letting the audience know that the film is going to be more of a reimagining than a remake. There are no signs of Mushu or Li Shang or even a musical number. There is, however, a rendition of “Reflection” as a cinematic score. The official trailer received a 21% dislike, so there’s a chunk who are wary about the upcoming live-action film. On Tuesday, December 4th, Disney held a test screening of Mulan in Orange County, CA, and we’ve been told what the audience members thought of the film. Since this is a test screening, the final film will be different.
There were concerns with the film, especially with it reportedly going through “extensive reshoots” according to Disinsider. The site says that the reshoots started in October and is expected to last for four months. If the reports are true, it would make sense for Disney to do a test screening in order to improve on the final version of the film.
A source close to us has revealed that a few audience reactions from the test screening were bad. How bad? From a score of 1 to 10, it was given a 4. We’re not sure what the reshoots will focus on, but Disinsider thinks it’s for the many battle sequences. However, reshooting the battle sequences may not help with the overall picture.
Disney released a sneak peek footage of Mulan during D23 Expo 2019, and our very own Mark Pacis thought it was good and funny. The scene has Mulan trying to show the head lady that she can be a good wife. But even though she’s giving this elaborate speech about being a good wife, she is trying to kill a roach while not disturbing her.
With the rumor of reshoots lasting until February, the final version of Mulan may shape up to be a better product. Audiences will find out when Mulan hits theaters on March 27, 2020.
