Bombshell Review

Bombshell

Roger Ailes is a man that became one of the biggest figures in the news world by building Fox News into the juggernaut it is today. But thanks to the group of brave women who told their stories, Roger Ailes was taken down. But does Bombshell effectively tell the story of these women?

Although it tells the story of these women safely, it’s still an energetic and entertaining story. The film also highlights the incredible performances of Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie.

Bombshell follows Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson, and Kayla Pospisil as they decide to take on the head of Fox News and the toxic atmosphere he has spread throughout the network.

Bombshell - Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie

Because of the state of Fox News nowadays, you tend to dislike anyone that has once worked for the news channel. As a result, trying to connect with these three brave women was a bit difficult at first. But throughout the film, you’ll root for their success more and more. Because no matter what their political alliances may be, no one should go through what they went through. It just shows you just how sleazy and disgusting Roger Ailes and those who defend him are.

Bombshell puts the stories of Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson, and Kayla Pospisil on different trajectories. First of all, Gretchen is the elder stateswoman who’s on her way out. As you can imagine, Megyn Kelly is the hot new thing right now. Lastly, Kayla wants so bad to be the future of Fox News. Their stories are different but they all eventually end up at the same endpoint.

Thankfully, the stories are told in such an energetic and entertaining way. In a lot of ways, the film emulates the storytelling style of Adam McKay. Having the main characters narrating the exposition on camera is a very Adam McKay style of explanation. The film will keep your attention throughout through some excellent performances and gripping drama.

Unfortunately, Bombshell doesn’t necessarily split the screen time between each character evenly. It focuses on one character for a while but then leaves them on the sidelines for a while. Nevertheless, this film is ultimately Megyn Kelly’s film. Gretchen and Kayla may have an integral part of the overall downfall of Roger Ailes but it’s Megyn Kelly that provided the final nail in Roger’s coffin.

Bombshell - John Lithgow

It’s just a shame that Megyn and Gretchen aren’t people that you connect to. You may feel sorry for Gretchen’s situation but she’s barely in the film. So you don’t feel as if there’s an injustice being done upon Gretchen. Megyn has a high-and-mighty quality to her that may rub you the wrong way. Either way, you might not sympathize with her but you’ll still root for her to bury Ailes.

Despite all of that, it’s Kayla’s story that is the most sympathetic. Although she’s not based on anyone, in particular, she still represents all of the women sexually abused by those at Fox News. Those women whose life-long dream was to work for the channel, only to have their dreams crash and burn. It’s a tragic tale but it shows you the strength of these people as well. Their perseverance is just simply inspiring.

Overall, Bombshell is a remarkable drama that highlights the heroes that took down one of the most powerful people in the news industry. Unlike films like Vice, Bombshell does play it safe in terms of its storytelling. However, the film puts the spotlight on all of the incredible performances by Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie.
