It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher horror classic Halloween is taking the trophy home for the best film to take place on the titular holiday, with the horror anthology Trick r’ Treat taking the number two spot. Disney’s classic stop-motion animated musical The Nightmare Before Christmas narrowly missed the second spot to land in third while also barely beating out fellow Disney fantasy comedy Hocus Pocus for the spot, with Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed sci-fi family adventure E.T. The Extraterrestrial rounding out the fifth spot.

Though some may think the Halloween subgenre is reserved for strictly horror movies, it covers a range of genres from slasher thrillers to the sci-fi action adventures to more family-friendly fare. The John Carpenter-created slasher franchise of the holiday name is one of the most popular during the season, with its original entry still proving to be an exhilarating outing 40 years later and last year’s reboot recreating its success. Though many of its sequels have a campy appeal that make it watchable outside of the season, the third installment also has a large cult following for its chilling premise.

Other more terrifying ventures into the horror genre include the 2007 anthology Trick ‘r Treat, this year’s adaptation of the acclaimed children’s novel series Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and 2016’s killer clown chiller Terrifier, a spin-off of the 2013 anthology All Hallows’ Eve.

For those not ready for a scary movie night, there’s more lighthearted fare out there in the forms of Disney’s Hocus Pocus, Sony’s Monster House, Laika’s ParaNorman, the Steven Spielberg classic E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Nickelodeon Films’ Fun Size.
